CHILDCARE CERTIFICATE COURSE

BASIC INFO:

DURATION: 8 weeks | Daily classes from 08h00 to 15h45.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Grade 9
  • Positive attitude and a passion for working with babies.
  • Basic language skills: understand, speak, read and write English or Afrikaans.

LANGUAGE OF INSTRUCTION: English and Afrikaans (where necessary)

Note from the facilitator:

Join us for this comprehensive course in baby and toddler care. You will play an important role in little children’s growth and development, therefore you need to have good understanding about their development phase and how to take care of them. This subject covers topics like factors affecting growth and development, how to develop leaning in the early years, how play stimulates learning, and more.

This course will prepare you for junior child care work at a crèche, nursery school or au pair work.

GENERAL:

Accredited by: Not accredited. The candidate will receive a Certificate of Completion.

Fee includes: Lectures, Handbooks, Certificates.

Dress code: Casual but neat. The uniform is only to be worn during in-service training hours.

Absenteeism: A doctor’s certificate is needed if a student is absent for more than 3 days.

Accommodation: Accommodation and travelling must be arranged by the learner.

WEEK 1: LIFE SKILLS

Personal development, Responsibilities, Communication and Conflict Management, Problem Solving, Effective Time Management, Study Methods, Job Application, CV’s and interviews.

WEEK 2: HOUSE MANAGEMENT

Personal Hygiene and Health, Organising the Workplace, Kitchen Skills, Food and Nutrition, Textiles and Safety in the Workplace.

WEEK 3 and 4: BABY CARE THEORETICAL TRAINING

General Care for Babies, Feeding (breast and bottle feeding, solid foods), Bathing, Vaccination, Teething and Baby Illnesses, Baby Massage, Baby Stimulation and First aid

WEEK 5: BABY CARE PRACTICAL EXPERIENCE

The learner gets the opportunity to experience the operations of a crèche and how to care for babies under supervision. Learners are evaluated for their knowledge, behavior, skills learned and attitude during their service at the care centers.

WEEK 6 and 7: TODDLERS

Child Care, Perceptual Development, Learning and Health Problems, Children’s Literature and Language Development, Creative Activities, Music, Movement Activities, School Readiness, Playground Safety, Organisation and Planning (Movement) and a balanced daily programme.

WEEK 8: PRACTICAL EXPERIENCE

The learner gets the opportunity to experience first-hand the operations of the preschool environment and how to keep and stimulate toddlers according to the suggested learning programmes. Learners will be evaluated for their knowledge, behaviour, skills learned, initiative taken and attitude during their service at the play schools or day care centers.
