The duration of the course is 8 weeks with daily classes from 08h00 to 15h45.

Section 1: Home Management

During the first week of the course attention is given to personal refinement such as: A positive self image, hygiene, etiquette, managing of personal finances, contracts, managing of debt, marriage, HIV and AIDS, the abuse of alcohol and drugs, the influence of pornography on the community, study and learning skills development, how to draw up a CV, how to conduct themselves during a job interview, etc.

During the second week attention is given to general house management such as: Washing and ironing, removal of stains, food preparation and garnishing, how to develop and maintain vegetable and herb gardens; flower arrangements, wine etiquette, etc.

The rest of the training period is committed to specific skills and then students are placed at specific instances for practical experience.

Baby Care

During the Baby Care section of the course attention is given to the following:

  • Bottle feeding
  • Breast feeding
  • Solid food feeding for babies
  • Planning of one's own day care facility
  • Teething and child sicknesses
  • Baby sign language for hearing babies
  • Baby massaging
  • Winds and colic
  • Baby bathing
  • Nappies
  • Baby stimulation
  • Vaccination
  • Baby first aid
  • Safety in the house

During the Toddler Care section of the course attention is given to the following:

  • Basic child care
  • Organisation and planning of daily activities
  • Child development
  • Music activities
  • Creative activities
  • Making of your own learning tools
  • Movement activities
  • Outside play

Section 3: Practical Experience

After completion of the theoretical training, the students are placed at a specific institution for intensive in service training at a creche or nursery school. The students return to the centre at the end of every practical week to write the Baby Care and Toddler Care Examinations. A total of 52 hours of practical observation is required.

The course in Child Care prepares students for employment as day care mothers or asassistants in creches and other pre-school centres. They will also be able to generatetheir own income by caring and looking after a small number of children themselves.

They can also be appointed in the following positions:

  • Assistant, junior child carer at a facility like a creche, nursery school or pre-school;
  • Child carer for a family with small children ("au pair");
  • Small group teacher or caring teacher.
